We’ve been busy trying to put even a tiny dent in the Parvo onslaught. People are vaccinating exposed/infected dogs thus creating localized Parvo outbreaks almost instantly. Remember we’ve already reported that Parvo is ubiquitous. That means Parvo is everywhere and anywhere. Vaccinations are adding to the problem.

In order to treat Parvo at home, in the past we recommended using a Parvaid treatment kit (i.e. Parvaid and several other products). Now, while we had success with this approach, we had reservations. The Canine Parvo virus very often attacks at the worst possible time (not that there’s ever a good moment for your dog to be attacked by the Canine Parvovirus, needless to say) – you might find it is 3:00am on a Sunday morning, and the vet’s clinic is shut.

In which case, what can you do?

You might already be aware that puppies suffering from Parvo often dehydrate extremely fast, which is why veterinarians will likely put them on an intravenous drip, but of course intravenous drips usually aren’t something you are able to simply purchase at your local supermarket.

And if you have no idea about the risks associated with dehydration, a fast research session using the web will soon point you in the right direction.

The good thing is that there is a home hydration therapy that is, in most cases, at least as efficacious as IV fluids as well as subcutaneous fluids …

The term Parvo means really tiny – the virus cannot be seen with the naked eye. To give you an idea of how small it is, visualize 1 fluid ounce, which is 2 tablespoons. That seems small, right? Well that’s huge in Parvo terms.

Here’s what you are dealing with: 1 gram of Parvo infected material contains 95 million virus particles, and yet it only takes 100 particles to infect your pet.

Oh, as a refresher, 1 gram = 0.0352739619 ounces. So 1 gram is almost nothing, yet in that single gram of infected feces, for example, there are enough virus particles to infect all of the dogs in your neighborhood … and there would be plenty left over for several more neighborhoods!

There are many types of this virus, but the one that you are probably looking for is the type that affects animals. Parvo in Humans, sometimes called 5th disease, Parvo virus b19 or Parvo b19, is a completely different virus that pertains to humans only, i.e. animals cannot catch this, and the animal version is not contagious to humans.

Canine Parvovirus has had several variations. It is now on its 5th version, and this Parvo 2c strain is by far the deadliest we’ve seen so far.

The virus is highly contagious and spreads via infected bodily fluids (vomit, feces, nose-to-nose contact, mucus, saliva, urine, etc.) Even you can carry and spread the virus on your clothing, shoes, car tires, etc.

Now, it is not air-borne in the strictest sense of the term, but if you have infected feces in your area and the wind blows, then the particles can travel to your yard and you too will have Parvo on your property.

By the same token, if you are currently Parvo-free (that’s excellent), then if a bird or insect, or other critters such as raccoons, squirrels, rabbits, etc. walk in infected feces or, as in the case of small mammals such as raccoons, ferrets, etc., these guys can carry, transport, and drop off the virus particles wherever they go. So, it is really not practical to disinfect your yard as you’ll never know when the virus will be transported back again.

This is really just a short introduction about Parvo. There are many different aspects that you could study. We are going to cut this short, because we have another site, What Is Parvovirus, that takes a much more detailed look at this virus.

As a word of caution, if you do not understand just how aggressive this virus is, just look online at our many sites where we talk about how this virus has evolved, and it seems to get worse each day. More and more people are losing their battle with the virus, and largely because they spend too much time in research mode vs. treatment mode.

Parvo outbreaks and hotspots are on the increase. There is no doubt about that. You hear about it all of the time. Talk to your friends and neighbors – they’ve probably experienced or heard many horror stories of Parvo wiping out entire litters, for example.

A question we see often is, “Are there any places safe from a Parvo attack?”

Unfortunately, we hate to be the bearer of bad news; it seems unlikely that you will find many Parvo-safe zones, that is if you limit your search to Planet Earth.

Let us take a closer look to find any patterns.

The following is the Top 10 Parvo areas of the US. Now, the list represents the orders sent to the list of states based on the population size of the state. This list does NOT represent sheer order numbers by state.

These are currently the worst states for Parvo in terms of the population size of the state:

1. Arizona
2. New Mexico
3. Nevada
4. West Virginia
5. Texas
6. Alabama
7. Hawaii
8. Arkansas
9. California
10. Tennessee

Now, in terms of sheer numbers of orders, then the list would look more like this:

1. California
2. Texas
3. Arizona
4. Georgia
5. Florida
6. North Carolina
7. Ohio
8. Tennessee
9. Alabama
10. Illinois

Either way, Parvo in the US is really bad right now. Almost daily we see the headlines (you can see more details in our Breaking News section) in all of the states, and many places are struggling with this problem.

You might think that really cold places could be the answer. What about Alaska, that gets plenty of freezing weather quite often, which should give Parvo a challenge, right?

Wrong. Parvo seems to thrive in freezing weather. It lives in the ground and all you need is rain or melted snow and it comes right back up to the surface, refreshed and ready for its next victim. Therefore, freezing temps (32F or 0C) won’t stop Parvo.

What about desert heat? That should slow him down.

Nope. Parvo is more than capable of surviving in the deserts of Arizona, California, and even in Nevada, where some say it seems like the sun is 10 feet above your head in the summer. In fact, boiling water (212F or 100F) is like a romp in the hot tub for Parvo. So, you can try to boil the virus, but he will just come back stronger than ever.

How about islands? That should be safe.

Sorry. Parvo has hit all types of island states. It has hit Hawaii, the United Kingdom (e.g. England, Ireland), the Philippines, the Caribbean (e.g. Aruba, Trinidad & Tobago, Puerto Rico, etc.) and in some of these areas, it is very remote with few services or resources. Even if people had the cash and wanted to take their animals to the vet, often these people are in short supply, if any are available at all.

How about Europe (e.g. France, Italy, etc.)? Maybe Parvo has not reached them yet?

Keep dreaming. The current über over-the-top 2c Strain of Parvo originated in Europe in 2000. It is definitely there in full force.

What about Asia, is Parvo a problem there too?

Yep. Thailand, Malaysia, India, it does not matter – Parvo is in the Asian countries as well.

OK, how about really faraway places like Australia or New Zealand? It could not have gotten there?

Wrong again. Parvo is in faraway places too.

The point is, Parvo is probably in most places. You may not have heard of any outbreaks in your particular area, but that certainly does not mean it hasn’t hit yet. It could literally be in your back yard and you would not even know it.

The virus is really tiny, which is where it gets its name from. One last bit of bad news, as you might not be able to take much more: Parvo is super-concentrated, amongst all of the other bad things.

Don’t get caught with your pants down. Once this virus strikes, it will be an extreme struggle to get your dog back on his feet again. The short answer to this is NO; time is definitely against you and your pet. If you look at our site, you’ll notice our tag line is: Who will win the race against Parvo? You need to remember that your dog may have just started showing symptoms, but in reality he has already been under attack for up to two weeks. The Parvo incubation period is anywhere from 3 – 15 days. That means, when your dog was first infected, he had not shown any symptoms yet; however, the virus was busy at work looking for food sources such as your dog’s bone marrow. A few days later, the virus is moving on to other easy targets and will end up attacking your dog’s intestines. At this stage your dog will start to feel this attack and little by little he will begin to show the classic Parvo symptoms:

• Lethargy
• Listlessness
• Loss of appetite and thirst
• Vomiting
• Dehydration
• Diarrhea (with and without blood)
• No play drive
• Depression
• No energy (he may sleep most of the day and night and only get up to use the bathroom)

So, the point here is, once you see ANY of the above symptoms, you must go into rapid treatment mode. We’ve seen evidence and spoken to lots of people that are spending days going to site after site, looking for solutions to a Parvo outbreak – when they could more wisely have spent that time taking steps to get their dog treated.

This is a fallacy: “There’s plenty of time to deal with this virus” – nothing could be further from the truth. This virus attacks and kills dogs anywhere from a few hours after you see the first symptom to a few short days later.

So, here’s what you can do:

You have a sick dog or puppy and you think it is Canine Parvovirus (or just Parvo). How do you know for sure? How to treat Parvo at home?

These are very good and very common questions that we hear almost daily, especially since about 2007 when the 2c Strain of Parvo started going around.

First, just to make sure that we’re on the same page, let’s recap what are the signs of Parvo to look for:

• Depression
• Lethargy
• Listlessness
• Loss of appetite
• Loss of thirst
• Weight loss will be very visible in small dogs
• Vomiting over and over
• Dehydration
• Diarrhea (very foul smelling)
• Bloody diarrhea (spots, streaks, gushing, any of these)
• No play drive, i.e. very unresponsive to normal activities
• Completely drained with no energy (sleeps most of the time)
• He may only be able get up for a rare bathroom break
• He may have a fever (103F / 39.44C or more)
• He may have chills

If you see ANY thing that looks like that, then your dog has Parvo and you don’t have time to dilly-dally around.

How To Treat Parvo At Home?

This is really the heart of the matter. Indeed it is very possible to treat your sick Parvo dogs and Parvo puppies at home using easy-to-cope-with Parvo home remedies.

The main problems with Parvo are two-fold: once your dog stops eating, refuses water, has started vomiting and diarrhea, he will become dehydrated and hypoglycemic very quickly. These two conditions can be a death mill for your pet. They must be addressed immediately – time is crucial with Parvo. One day could be the difference between survival and death.

Hydration can be easily achieved at home without needles for IV fluids or other costly procedures.

How to tell if your dog is dehydrated? These couple of steps will work for most breeds of dogs.

1. Look at his gums. If they are pale pink or white, then he is dehydrated and you must administer the tea ASAP.
2. You can also pull a small amount of skin (from the back of his neck) up and twist (BE GENTLE and don’t pull too much); if it goes back very quickly, then he is probably not dehydrated, whereas if it takes a long time, then give him the tea ASAP.
3. Now, these two tests may not work for some breeds: if the gums are very dark normally, as with Chows, or if they have really baggy skin, like Shar Peis, then you might have a harder time with these tests. However, the tea can’t hurt them, so if you gave it to them because they are not drinking on their own, then there should not be a problem – just follow the dosage guide based on the dog’s weight.

Hypoglycemia results when dogs stop eating. Many complications can happen (these are above and beyond the many problems that the Parvo causes). These complications can even be more serious than the Parvo itself. So, needless to say, this is a complicated aspect of Parvo and unfortunately cannot be properly addressed in a short article.

So, if you have all of these new problems with this virus, why in the heck are you still talking about solutions that may have worked 5, 10, 15, 20 years ago? What is the point of that? So this, coupled with the fact that we could easily end up with hundreds of dogs, made up our minds that our skills and talents could be utilized in a more productive manner.

We searched the Internet for a solution and we came across a couple of products that claimed to help treat the Canine Parvovirus. This looked very promising as it turned out in the late 90′s we had three of our then five Chihuahuas come down with Parvo, one after another.

At that time, there were no alternative Parvo treatments readily available so we had to take each pup to the vet. In 1997-1998, it cost us over $700 USD to treat all three of them. We thought that was expensive, but there was no other choice and we would have not then or now even contemplated euthanasia as an option. We were very fortunate in that we saved them and they made a full recovery.

After having gone through that nightmarish ordeal, we felt very excited to have found a home treatment for Parvo, as the vet’s treatment for Parvo has skyrocketed – today, you can expect to pay anywhere from $500 USD to over $10,000 USD, per dog! We’ve heard that people are expected to pay thousands for each dog, make large up-front payments, and settle a big bill promptly, i.e. be prepared to write a blank check. Otherwise the vet will strongly push for euthanasia when people cannot afford to spend four or five thousand in vet hospital bills.

This is very sad to hear when people have such bleak choices presented to them.

Well, we found two products that claimed to treat Parvo: the first one we found was ParvoGuard, which was a big disappointment, and we will soon have a detailed report of our findings for this product and the company behind it; now the other product that we found was Parvaid.

What a big difference! Long-story-short, we began to write about this herbal product and have sold it on our ParvoBuster.com site for some time now.

We’ve dealt with 4,870 cases of the Parvovirus and just in the span of a couple of years, we’ve seen this virus mutate and become harder and harder to cope with.

In times past, just a few years ago, Parvaid was more than enough to get your dog back on his feet.

Next, we had to pair this product with an herbal antibiotic/anti-parasitic called Vibactra Plus, and this worked well for a short while.

We then had to package a third herbal product, Life Cell Immune Support (immune system booster and de-tox agent), and since many Parvo dogs have a fever, we also had to start including a doggie fever and pain reducer, Doggie Pain Relief.

Just when we thought that was enough, we found that many dogs also experience inflammation in their intestines, so yet another product is necessary to deal with that, Adizone (for cats, you must use a special formulation just for their delicate systems: Adizone-C).

That means today’s Parvo is a much more aggressive virus that requires a counter-attack on multiple fronts in order to have a decent chance to heal your dogs.

Parvo is continuing to evolve, and so must we.

This is why we spend a lot of time researching and refining our Parvo game plan. You will find lots of sites that are still talking about protocols that worked 5 years ago (or more). The Parvo of the 70′s, 80′, and 90′s was bad, but it pales by comparison to the new strains, such as the 2c Strain.
